One Song at a time: 62. Ek Vaar Panka Varuni

'vasantha panjami naalil' from 'Bhargavi Nilayam', the Baburaj Master's beauty, is a favorite of mine. One day while listening to this song on youtube I saw a comment which said that this song was inspired by a Marathi song, 'ek vaar panka varuni'. So I immediately searched for that song and I could see why the poster felt that way. While Baburaj's song is a classic in its own right, the Marathi song is an outstanding one as well.

Youtube says the music is by Vasant Pawar and Sudhir Phadke. I am unable to get exactly who composed the song but the singer is undoubtedly Sudhir Phadke. The song can be classified in the 'soft melody' category and Sudhir Phadke sings it lovingly. His voices suits the overall tenor of the song. The way Kalyani is used in this song is delicious. I was hooked to this song the very first time I heard it and I keep hearing this often. When sounds have ceased and when you want to have darkness and loneliness of the night around you, that will be the perfect time for this song to come wafting towards you.

Sudhir Phadke is a well know music director in the Marathi music world. At the same time he has also given some lovely songs in Hindi. Unfortunately his songs are known to people but his name is not too well.

Here is a very melodious song by Sudhir Phadke, again based on Kalyani, sung brilliantly by Lata. Another song you must add to your collection and listen to when you want some peace. Lyrics by Narendra Sharma.

His most famous song in Hindi films is probably 'jyoti kalash chalke' from 'Bhabi Ki Chudiyan'. Based on Bhoop (Mohanam in Carnatic) this was a major hit when it was released and to this date it sustains it popularity. One of Lata's top songs. Lyrics by Narendra Sharma

Lata has sung some lovely Mohanam as well as Mohana Kalyani songs. You would think no one other than Lata could have done justice to this. You would have been right had it not been for the fact that Sudhir Phadke himself has sung this song and it is a terrific version. His version is mellower. Do listen.
